Different types of saunas: Finnish, Russian, Turkish

Saunas are a popular method for relaxation and health promotion. There are different types of saunas that differ in their origin, temperature and specific features. In this article we will look at the three most famous types of saunas: the Finnish sauna, the Russian banya and the Turkish sauna.

1. Finnish sauna

The Finnish sauna is probably the best known and most widespread form of sauna. It comes from Finland and is characterized by a high temperature of around 80-100 degrees Celsius. In a Finnish sauna, dry air is created by pouring water onto hot stones. This creates a pleasant steam that opens the skin and promotes sweating.

2. Russian Banya

The Russian banya is similar to the Finnish sauna, but has some unique features. The temperature in a banya is usually between 70-80 degrees Celsius. In contrast to the Finnish sauna, a special ritual called 'wenik' is performed in the banya. This involves hitting the body with a bouquet of birch branches. This is said to stimulate blood circulation and promote skin cleansing.

3. Turkish sauna (hammam)

The Turkish sauna, also known as hammam, is a traditional form of sauna widely used in Turkey and the Middle East. In contrast to the other two types of sauna, a hammam is a steam sauna. The temperature is around 40-50 degrees Celsius, but the humidity is much higher than in a Finnish or Russian sauna. In a hammam, the body is cleansed through a special peeling and massage with soapy water.

Regardless of the type of sauna, all three types provide health benefits such as promoting blood circulation, detoxifying the body, and relieving stress. When choosing a sauna, personal preferences, physical tolerance and individual needs should be taken into account.
